The interesting thing about the Stacy Lee article is the locally we aren’t seeing Asian Americans as so silent. With the recent immigration of many Hmong people there has been a lot of local opposition to it, especially in more rural communities. A lot of this has to do with schools in small communities that have never really encountered ELL students are now suddenly faced with ELL students and a lot of budget constraints.

I have seen personally seen the effects of the stereotype of Asian Americans as the smart kid. Last year the Valedictorian at South Division High School was Hmong. Yet while he was giving his speech at graduation, people were heckling him on stage and were telling him “to learn English or get off the stage.” This poor kid was being held down by both stereotypes of Asian-Americans, that he was smart and that he had also just gotten off the boat.

I think a lot of what you said about EEL in rural areas is true. These areas have never had to deal with EEL learners. I know it’s not easy for a rural district to learn, but they have to create/modify curriculum to make it something EEL students can comprehend and complete, yet still challenging them. This is a country that is supposed to embrace multiculturalism and nourish everyone. Everyone is supposed to get the same opportunities. Just because someone is from a different culture does not mean they are capable. IF they do not speck English, there are other ways to communicate content and teach them English at the same time.

Also, I think that is incredibility disrespectful of people attending the graduation at South Division High School. English is not the only language in the world!!! There are hundreds of all languages that are all important parts of who people are. Just because one does not speck English well or with an accent does not mean they are dumb. I'm sure people in the crowd do not like being made fun of, especially in a public situation, so why they would do it to someone else is beyond me!!
